Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness is the second game created about Warcraft universe. It is again a real time strategy, played in the fantasy world of Azeroth. The both sides, Orcs and Humans begins to forge their sides by joining other races to form today's main forces, which exist in World of Warcraft. For example the elves are now the Alliance's archers, gnomes drive flying machines and dwarves have some dirty roles.  The game play is very enchanted too, allowing multiple unit selection and a lot more comfort. In our days, the problem still remain the screen resolution.

The easiest way to play Warcraft 2 windowed is with DOS-Box . But the game require its CD to run. What to do is 1.Mount the game as c:. 2. Mount the CD as  cd rom drive d:. To mount the game CD use the specific dosbox command (mount d I:\ -t cdrom )(I is the CD rom drive letter), so it recognize it as a CD. You can mount even the virtual drive, just do not forget what letter it have. 3. Install the game from there. It will create its own folder c:\war2 and run it from there. It will even remember the saved games.

The Dark Portal Screenshot | Warcraft 2

Here is the Dark Portal from the last mission in Alliance campaign.It is guarded by demons, but reaching this point, where the round island under it is occupied, the portal will easily fall. However,  reaching this point is not that easy without cheats. The hardest part is to secure an oil platform. The starting oil will be enough for only one Elven Destroyer, or for the Town Hall upgrade. All the oil wells are already used by the Horde, so one Destroyer will do nothing. The best solution remain to upgrade the Town Hall and produce Mages, then cast Fire Ball and Blizzard all the time. When at least one oil well is secured, victory will not be far.

The Stables building is available after the first upgrade of the Town Hall. It allow the production of Knights, which may later become Paladins, and cast the healing spell.

The Mage Tower building is available after the second upgrade of the Town Hall. It allow the production of Mages, which are very useful when resources are limited. There are 6 researches in the Mage tower, which allow the Mage to cast the spells, one of them, the powerful Blizzard spell.

This is a very powerful spell in Warcraft 2. It have area effect and damages either units and buildings from the both sides. The Blizzard is cast by the Mage unit and is researched in the Mage Tower building.

Gryphon Rider Screenshot | Warcraft 2

Here is the Gryphon Rider, the ultimate flying unit of the Alliance. It have a ranged lightning attack, which do not do much damage and speed is too slow. They are good against rival flying units and Battleships or Dreadnoughts, because they can not attack flying units. The Gryphon Riders are produced in the Gryphon Aviary building, which is available after the last Town Hall upgrade.

Gnomish Submarine Screenshot | Warcraft 2

The Gnomish Submarine is an invisible naval units. It have a strong attack and can easily sink a Battleship and Dreadnoughts. But if detected by a Flying Machines, it will perish almost instantly. Gnomish Submarine is produced in the Shipyard.

Here is a mage unit from Warcraft 2. It looks pretty harmless, but he is quite powerful. Mages are produced in the Mage Tower() and also there more spells are available for research. One of them is the Blizzard Spell(). The mage have the Fireball spell by default, which is very good against air units.

The Battleships are the ultimate naval units. They can easily destroy a base at the shore, as they have a very strong armor and devastating attack against ground units. But they can not attack flying units and can not detect Submarines. If they are left on their own, they can easily perish. The Battleship is produced in the Shipyard and require a lot of resources, especially oil.

The Church building is available after the second upgrade of the Town Hall. It allow the Knights to become Paladins, and the Paladin's spells are researched there.

There is the glorious Paladin, the strongest human melee unit. He have two spells, Far Sight and Healing. How is Paladin created? When the Church building is completed, it will offer an upgrade to transform all Knights to Paladins. When the research is finished, the knights will become Paladins and a Magic reserve will appear under the unit statistics. One magic heal 1 hit point. In the Barracks, now we produce Paladins instead of Knights.

The Barracks is the most important military building in Warcraft 2. It can produce all ground melee and ranged units, after the necessary requirements are met.  They are Footman, Elven Archer, Ballista and Knight. It is good to construct a Barracks when advancing.

The Knights are the strongest melee unit for the human in Warcraft 2. They are produced in the Barracks after the Stables building is constructed. What is interesting in Warcraft 2 is that there is no Priest unit to cast healing, like in Warcraft 1. Here the Knight is upgraded into a Paladin, and the Paladins can cast the Healing Spell. The upgrade appear in the Church building.
There is also no auto cast yet, like in Warcraft 3.

The Lumber Mill building have a couple of usages. First, it acts as a gathering point for collecting lumber. Second, it increase the amount of lumber every peasant is bringing home with +25. Third, there are the upgrades for the Elven Archer. And forth, it allow producing archers in the Barracks and unlocks advanced buildings.

Ballista Screenshot | Warcraft 2

Here is the Ballista unit. It is the ultimate ranged unit for the Alliance and is mostly used to destroy buildings. Defending with ballistas may be very harmful. If not watched, or not on hold position, the computer will lure the foot units around the ballista exactly where it shoot.

The Town Hall is the main building. It can produce Peasants and serves as collecting point for gold and lumber gathering. The Town Hall have two more upgrades, which allow advanced buildings and researches. To have +25 lumber we need to build the Lumber Mill. To have +25 Oil we need to build the Refinery. On this screen, find a Town Hall, a critter, a tower, a gold mine.

Gnomish Flying Machine Screenshot | Warcraft 2

The Gnomish Flying Machines in Warcraft 2 are not military units. But they are excellent scouts and can detect the naval submerged units like the Gnomish Submarine. A flying units which have 2 armor, 0 damage, range 1, sight 9 and speed 17.
