Today We Play: Civilization 2 Gold

Suddenly I got this excessive desire to play Civ 2 gold. This game has the best I love in games, runs without problems,  runs without delay and do not have screen resolution problems. I found an old map and modified it for grinding in the highest difficulty. The orange player is my choice, it starts at the bottom and have a way to the center where there are a lot of rivers. All other players start on separated unified land and have plenty of room for expanding. There are also 3 minor islands connected between the land away from the center. The close roads to the center are mountains for efficient defense. Here is the original Civ 2 Gold map. 

But to have a chance on highest difficulty, I made a scenario map with some key features:

• Science is 80/10, which is very slow, something like 160 turns to discover Pottery. For that goody huts are very important as they are the only science source at the beginning. Be sure to find Masonry to build the Pyramids, and more importantly Pottery for Hanging Gardens.
• Money are set to 2k, this is to have a chance to build the Hanging Gardens before the rivals, if you manage to discover Pottery. And optional Pyramids. The other early wonders are expendable.
• Maximum turns are set to 4200, to have a lot of time for grinding.
• Hills terrain is set to 4 food and 8 Trade with irrigation. There is no hill terrain in the game, so you have to make one if you like with Engineers when discover them. This is to test how much money may be made at late game for one turn, i.e. can we make 30k per turn? :)
• And that is pretty much it. Expand fast, mend disorders, get a city in the center covered with mountains, make forts on the mountains, by that time rivals should have cities in the center too, make diplomats and get armies from none to prepare for late game. 

Then try to reach the limits in the late game :)

Civilization 2 is no doubt one of the best turn based strategy game. One of the most exciting part of old civilizations, like Civ 2 Gold, is that we can make a lot of cities. Not that Civilization 5 is bad, but playing with 7-10 cities is like playing for the day. The adventure of expanding is somehow cut off. Now can you find all the 103 cities of the orange player? In Civilization 2 PC game, and all its modifications(which I'll review some day) we can upgrade our workers to Engineers, after the discovery of Explosives science. Being able to change terrain with them we can modify the bonus resources that will appear too. Only jungles and mountains can not be changed back, so finding gold, I wouldn't replace it.

PRODUCTION AND GOLD BONUSES
1. Silk Bonus:
- Silk appear on forests. Chopping down the forest it will become Wheat, but the silk gold bonus is much more worth it.
- With no government bonuses roads it gives 1 Food, 2 Production and 3 Trade

2. Gold Bonus:
- Gold appear on mountains. Mountains can be transformed to hills and the bonus will become Wine. The mountains can not be turned back.
- With no government bonuses roads, or mines it gives 0 Food, 1 Production and 6 Trade.

3. Wine Bonus:
- Wine appear on hills terrain and it is a competitive alternative of the Silk. Attention, changing the hills will transform the square in grassland, and the bonus will not be visible, the grassland then need to be transformed to forest or plains and the bonus will appear.

4. Buffalo Bonus:
-  Buffaloes appear on plains terrain. Changing them to forest will result in Pheasants, which do not give a single trade. They just gives additional +2 production.

5. Coal Bonus:
- Coal appear on hills. It is the alternative of Buffalo bonus, for big production cities. It will not give as much food and trade, but with a mine and good government it may bring up to +7 production.


JUNGLE and SWAMP BONUSES - Attention, these terrains can not be planted back.
6. Spice Bonus:
- Spice appear only on Swamp. Removing the swamp will destroy the bonus. It bring 3 Food and 4 Trade.
7. Gems Bonus:
- Gems appear on jungle. They bring 1 Food and 4 Trade.
8. Bananas Bonus:
Bananas appear on jungle. They bring 4 Food and 1 Trade.


SEA BONUSES - seas can not be changed.
9. Whales Bonus: Whales are perfect. If the city have them in its radius, it will develop quite well.
10. Fish Bonus: Fish bring a lot of food.

11. Pollution: This is the result of industrial activity of big and dirty cities. They will damage the square and reduce it income. They need to be cleaned fast with the Engineers.

Playing Civ 2 Gold on high difficulty is one constant battle. At the later stages when all rivals are well developed the Battleship unit play an important role in defending the seas. The bad news is that the AI makes an industrial quantity of Cruise Missiles and sink the guarding battleships easily.

To avoid this annoying situation keep one AEGIS Cruiser in the same square with the Battleship(on the screenshot). This way the AEGIS will make the defense and it is very good against missiles and planes, while the Battleships clear the naval units.

This is a description of the main city panel from Civilization 2 Gold PC video game. The city from the screenshot is a size of 32, and produce 331 gold per turn on Republic government with 80% tax rate.

 1. Happy Citizens. They appear from buildings, luxury rate and Musicians specialists(4).One of them alter one unhappy citizens(3), if unhappy citizens are more than happy citizens, the city will enter into a Civil Disorder.
2. Content Citizens. These are the content people, they just work hard.
3. Unhappy Citizens. They appear when the city grow bigger, the empire grow wider and the difficulty higher. Unhappy people are made content with certain buildings like the Temple.
4. Specialists. These are the people that do not work or the city fields(5). We can click on them and choose one of 3 specialists: Musicians - will make one happy face, Scientists - increase research or Merchants - increase gold income.

The sum of all citizens give the number of the city, 32.

5. City working fields. Here the nonspecialist population is placed to work. A working square gives one of(or) 3 resources: Food, Production and Trade.
6. Food supply. This is how much food the population eats. Every man need 2 food, we have 32 men, so it needs 64 food to sustain the city.
7. Surplus food. This is the food that remain after feeding the population. It is added to the Food Storage(10) and when it is filled up, a new citizen will appear. Supply + Surplus gives all the food that the city produce from working fields.
8. Trade. This is the number of trade arrows that the city produce from working fields,  after subtracting the Corruption(9). Trade arrows are distributed to Research and Gold Income, depending on the tax rate set. It include the number of caravans trade routs.
9. Corruption. As far the city is from capitol, more corruption it will generate. Same buildings reduce corruption, like courthouses. On Democracy government, there is no corruption(in the game that is).
10. Food Storage. Here the surplus food is gathered every turn. As we know, when it is filled up, a new citizen will appear.
11. Production. This is how much production the city generates. Because it is set to produce Capitalisation, every production shield is transformed to +1 gold.
12. Maintenance. This field shows the units the city have been built and the production needed to sustain them.
