Hammer of the Gods - Playing with Dwarves

Here are some notes, what I need to know next time I play Hammer of the Gods DOS game with dwarves. Dwarves play with red and they have the strongest heroes.

Dwarf special unit.

The dwarf special unit is the basic dwarf. It is very clumsy unit and even footmen are more valuable than them, as they can not be joined in cities to increase its size.  Dwarves are also the slowest unit with only 10 movement points. Advantage is they can pass mountains for 3 points and hills for 2.

Dwarf City

Dwarf rely on gold. A full mountain surrounded city on size 125 gives 107 gold!

Dwarf Strongest Army

Because dwarves do not have Elf quests the strongest army do not include elves.  They are:

- 2 simple archers.

- 1 fire wizard, which is may be the strongest wizard.

- 2 dwarf heroes with regeneration items. The dwarf quest do not give any regeneration, but the other two races - elves and trolls do have, and when their heroes are slain near neutral castles, the item is there to be picked up.

- 2 fire giants, which are the strongest unit dwarves receive from quests. They are 3 overall.

- Double movement item (taken from humans).

- Flying ship (taken from elves).

* With this army the dwarves are unstoppable!

Dwarf Quests and Terrain

Dwarf quests gives mostly heroes and special units.

- Terrain quest are +1 gold on mountain and +1 food on hills and mountain. A human terrain quest gives +1 food on rivers.

- Two troll heroes

- +4 Weapon

- 2 viking heroes.

- The ending quest is to generate 15 k gold

- The final quest is to have 3/4 of all gold, which is quite long.

Trade Treaty

A trade treaty at turn 80 may bring 2300 gold per turn!

 Sword of Speed

The sword of speed is actually a human item. Placed in the hands of a hero with a defense and attack item, especially a troll hero, it rocks.

(the quality of the movie is not good, because the capture program is having issues with DOS-Box)

Hammer of the Gods - Playing with Trolls

Here are some notes, what I need to know next time I play Hammer of the Gods old DOS game with trolls. Trolls play yellow and they are the most durable race. Their final quest is to raze a rival capitol and the last quest is to have 3/4 of all cities.

Troll special unit. 

The special unit of the trolls have 14 movement points and have natural regeneration, restoring one health point per 2 turns in combat. A good tactic playing with trolls is to rotate them in the front line to be shot by enemy archers, while your archers take a good damage.

Troll Strongest Army

The strongest army of the trolls include elves as they have elf quests to make. The best stack is:

- 2 elf heroes with storm protection ammulet, healing staff, double movement item.

- 1 necromancer to fire deadly magic from the last line

- 2 more leves, because when having elves the enemies do not stay behind walls.

- 1 troll hero with attack and defense item

- 2 fire giants.

Collecting Items

It is always safe to travel with only one unit, because neutral castles do not attack 1 unit stack. Heroes have more movement and can collect the item when they see it. These items are dropped by rival heroes when they fall in the neutral castles trap.

Hammer of the Gods is a turn based strategy fantasy  computer game. It can be played with DOSBox anywhere. It is very fishy old DOS game that is interesting and replayable. The graphic is my favourite 2D with big icons and readable fonts.

The game take place in the mythical Nordic lands, where we choose to play one of four races - Vikings, Elves, Trolls and Dwarves. When we choose the race and set the map parameters, we appear on the land with our capitol city. For the elves it is Alfhiem. The land is covered with the fog of war, which show an inaccurate map of the world, made by some lazy cartographers. 

Our first task is to check the quest tree and choose a quest to make. Then we begin to explore and colonize the weakest cities we can find.

Before we begin playing HoG, we can set specific parameters on the map, like the most old strategy games, and the less of the newly designed craps out there. Playing with many cities is fun and playing with less castles is easier. Also playing Elf we need a lot of forests, they will bring more gold after certain quests. Playing Trolls we need more tundras, again for more gold and food after quests. And dwarves like mountains, more gold there. Big rivers will make the terrain harder and small rivers bring more gold but less food.

There are 4 races in Hammer of the Gods computer game. All of them have their advantages:

• Humans have the Berserker special unit and can recruit viking heroes.
• Trolls have the Troll special unit that regenerates 1 point of health per 2 turns.
• Elves have the Elf special unit that is the best atcher. Can get +1 gold on forest.
• Dwarves have the Twarf special unit that is strong and hard to hit. Can get +1 gold on hills.

Hammer of the Gods - How to Colonize Screenshot

The cities in HoG Game are generated with the map, like in the Warlords game and not like Civ games created by settlers. We can colonize a city only with the regular units, i.e. the special race units can not colonize. When the defence of the city is destroyed and we have a regular unit in the army, we will be prompted to colonize it. If not, the city will stay and the next turn it will have another guarding army that need to be destroyed. If the city is razed, it can be colonized at eny time later when a regular unit reach it. Every unit sent on colonization will increase the city population by +1.

This is the city screen from Hammer of the Gods PC game. On the top left we have the working area of the city. The wares are the gold incom and it is not affected by population.  The food supply will increase the population, which will give better defending garrison.  The first line of troops is the defending garrison and the units under it are the army currently in the city sqare.

There are 3 types of ruins in HoG computer game. Ancient trees, caves and temples. The ruins on the map are dormant, until a quest from the Quest Tree is given to visit a certain ruin. So we must first find that ruin and enter it to fight the monsters.

There are the clumsy skeletons. They can be found in a ruin, to complete one of the quests from the Quest Tree. Skeletons are week, but the reward for crushing them is great.
