Today we Play: Colonization 4

Today we Play: Colonization 4
A few days ago, I was browsing my blog for a glimpse in the times gone far. Then I stumbled upon one of my old screenshots of Sid Meier's Civilization 4: Colonization. Suddenly an overwhelming desire engulfed me to play the game again. All those epic times of the wilderness and then the excessive war with the king. This strange feeling of a magical wave passing from the chest to the mind... It was better than love! :)
Colonization 4
This time I didn't edited the map and played in the unknown, but without other nations. This way I do not need to rush the independence, creating liberty bells to get the Founding Fathers.  Hopefully there were some mountains around to mine silver. After making the first scout and visiting the natives settlement money begun to flow and the cities to grow. This time I made it loosing only one city, many many times. With  the artilleries positioned behind the city I can get it back at the next turn. Defense in the cities always suck, so a good amount of cavalries catch the kin's army on the open field. Next time I'll specifically make one city to lure the king's men there.

Independence War | Civilization 4 Colonization Screenshot

Independence War | Civilization 4 Colonization Screenshot
Civ 4 col game is won when all of the king units are destroyed after declearing the Independence. In this game, I got myself involved against 2 000 soldiers, 1 000 dragoons, 1 200 artilleries amd 1 200 ships on higher difficulty and with no world builder help. I faced the king's army with 300 soldiers, 200 dragoons, 70 cannons, 11 ships and 21 cities - all making food, horses and weapons for new soldiers. In the first two turns all my ships fell, as I wolud soon leave the coastal cities and there is nothing to do against so many Man-O-Wars. The game plan was to attack with full health dragoons and retreat for healing. Coastal cities are bad idea for defense, but I managed to hold 4-5 turns while the first one fell. A few reataliation attack with only cannons and while still having roads were a big mistake from my side, but yet some more enemy units gone. When all 5 sea cities fell I thought i could hold them on the second line. Now the only concern were the enemy artilleries as if they get near the city, they will reduce the defense to 0, and the city is as good as gone. 5-7 turns and my dragoons were extremely exhausted. the king was stacking units of 50 and more, so I could hardly reach the artilleries. Had to leave 2 cites from the second line. By turn 25-30 of the independence I had just one veteran dragoon left with the double healing upgrade. The second line was gone and all colonists, farmers and workers, were now soldiers fighting even on yellow bar. The king still had around 300 artilleries, which were my nightmare. the difficult terrain should slow down the enemy advance and keeping units in occupied cities gave a moment to breath and heal. But not for too long. More stacked in 20 and 30 armies were knocking at the third line. When it fell i had 8 cities 3 of which did not produce tools. Yet I didn't gave up. The 50 dragoons left were at maximum levels of experience and when attaching at full health no one could stop them. A lot of foot soldiers from the colonies were good at defending behind the city walls and enemy soldiers and dragoons just perished there. Finally the king was with 300 soldiers and 30 artilleries. He had to defend the occupied cities so no more advance waves. To return those cities was more than easy with the 8 colonies producing cannons. It was a two days battle, as one turn at the beginning could take half and hour and even more :) But I can not really explain the pleasure of winning.

Here is the replay for this epic game on you tube.

After our ship discover the new world in Civilization 4 Colonization computer game, we build our first colony on a suitable location near the arriving area. Colonies in Civ 4 Col work only one square around them. This colony should be great. It have one sea bonus resource and one food bonus resource. There is a thick forest for lumber and production and a lovely hill for ore and tools. The river will also give +1 on any rosource on the tile it flows. In general the main colony is not needed to be industrial, but agricultural, so we can breed a lot of free colonists there.

The first thing to build is the Dock. It will give more food on seas. Next we will need the warehouse and then the church to attract more colonists from Europe. Then, our task is to explore the region with one colonist and make city improvements with the Pioneer. Then with the first 20-30 raw materials we go back to Europe to search for a scout or any colonist to spare for exploration.

If we are lucky, we may find a scout among the first immigrants in Civilization 4 Colonization computer game. This will make the difference in the beginning stages. If no, we must first buy some horses from Europe and equip a free colonist to scout around. He will eventually find a village that will train him in scout and get a lot of experience.

But the natural scout is best. We must visit as many tribal villages with him and speak to their chiefs. They will give a lot of  precious gold coins and even full carts with goldies and shinies. When the treasure cart arrive in one of our cities, the King will directly offer 50% split in profit. This may be acceptable in the beginning, but later we may buy a Galleon ship that have 8 cargo hold, transport the treasure cart to Europe, and sell it with the current tax rate.

Another great aspect in Civilization 4 Colonization is the Founding Fathers concept. If  we play with another European rival, we must compete for them. Every Founding Father need Political points. Political points are acquired from liberty bells. Exploration Fathers will need Exploration points too. They are acquired from exploring the lands. We will have a lot of it. Trade Fathers will need Trade Points, generated by trading. Military points are made by fighting and so on.

To be adequate, we may build a colony made for that. It will have a food worker, wood cutter and carpenter. At first not needed to be specialists. And this colony will make only Political Points. The other types we can gate in the course of the game.

Beside trading with Europe in Civilization 4 Colonization, we can trade with the native Indian Tribes. The Indian villages trade everything, but for the goods in the picture near its name, they will give a very good price. They will trade as long as they have gold , so they are not endless source and if we hunt their villages, they will not generate gold.

To trade with the natives we need a ship or a wagon train with the resource we wan to trade. This wagon train on the screenshot id full with clothes. They are made by cotton in our colonies. Then we need to go with the wagon train to the village that want clothes. Then clicking the Trade button will open the diplomacy window with the tribe, where we make the exchange.

The native tribes in Civilization 4 Colonization computer game, are minor civilizations and will not make settlers and expand. Their villages are already in the new world, and we are actually the invaders. But we may play without fighting them. The game is to oppose the king, and the native villages can be very useful with Defensive Pacts. If we build our colonies around them, pay for the land we occupy, and attract some key Founding Fathers, the Indian tribes may love us and bring gifts from time to time.

First we can trade with them and avoid the insane taxes from the King. Second we may place missionaries to convert the natives, giving bonus free colonists. And third, we can train the gathering professions only from them. There is no Tobacco Planter specialist in Europe during these times. Here on the screenshot, the Cuzco village can train our free colonists into Expert Cotton Planters. The most useful are the farmer trainers.

This is a maximum developed colony for producing cigars in Civilization 4 Colonization computer game. To make such a colony we need at least one tobacco bonus resource and a grassland to build the city on it. It is good to have one forest and one hills around. The rest may be plains and shores for food. Then we need two Expert Tobacco Planters(The dudes with the hats in the city radius). They can be trained only in the native Indian villages. Later on, we can train them, placing a free colonist in the School building. To harness the production we need 3 Master Tobacconists(the three green smokers) and a Cigar Factory, which will bring 50 cigars per turn, plus percentage of the liberty bells bonus. Beside the three lazy Master Tobacconists, there is the Elder Statement bringing more liberty bells.

Here is a nice colony development in Civilization 4 Colonization computer game. Most of the towns are size of 9 or 11 due ti food limits. The size 15 town seems to have a bonus food resource around. Most of them are producing cannons. It seems they are preparing for the upcoming revolution. The wagon trains are working hard transporting resources and the army is gathering along the eastern coast. Expanding on the both sides of the continent we can send ships to Europe from the western coast too.
