Here is our base. They will enter from the Hangars. We can place installations in it, which allows different options:

• Living Quarters - give room for 50 people, including soldiers, scientists or engineers.
• Laboratory - give space for 50 scientist to research unlimited items.
• Workshop - give space for 50 engineers to manufacture one item.
• Radars - detect UFOs.
• Defense - help when aliens attack the base. If the ship is not destroyed by many defense buildings it will at least reduce their numbers.
• General Stores - gives 50 space for storing any item different than human. I.e. weapons, materials, armor, tanks, ordnance, alien ship parts, corpses and equipment.
• Alien Containment - needed to store live aliens and be able to research them.
• Hangar - give 1 slot for flying crafts, including interceptors and Skyrangers.

Hint: It is important to build the Hangars in one place, so when aliens attack the base, the squad is not too separated.  
Hint: Make a base only for production but not more than 5 workshops. When engineers became more than 255, the hex value will rotate and begin from 0. Manufacture medikids and laser pistols and sell them to survive on high difficulty.

The Cyberdiscs are very strong alien tanks that can fly and deal heavy plasma damage. They usually escort the Sectoids in large ships and bases. When they die, they explode, be sure to keep distance. They need 3-4 heavy laser shots to be destroyed. In the best case, if on the ground, a high explosive throw will blow the cyberdisc off.

The Reapers are tank sized creatures with only melee attack. They can be encountered in terror missions and bases. They are not very strong, as they have no armor, but a lot of health. A couple of auto shots from the laser rifle will take it down. They are good to train reactions, as long as they are not in large numbers.

Ethereal are the hardest aliens in UFO: Enemy Unknown. They are clever, have potent psi abilities and carry the biggest alien guns. Hopefully the have no armor, but a lot of health. Sometimes two heavy plasma hits are needed to bring an Etherial down. An when they are many, like in this base defense, the combat is insanely difficult and sweating..

The Sectopods are very strong alien tanks that can stand 6 heavy plasma hits and deal plasma damage. They usually escort the Ethereals in large ships and bases. They are mechanical creatures with thick armor, but not very bright. Have good reactions.

Phew, the nasty mob is down, and the tank lives! Another good tactic against Sectopods is to to keep the soldiers out of range, while the tank spot an enemy. Firing outside the aliens' rage, they will not return fire.

How to deal with alien controlled units:
Before such insane missions, we should know which people are vulnerable to alien control and equip them with the simple pistol. That way, they will just scratch the Power Suit of their comrades. And they will increase some reactions too, when we are moving around them.

And there is the Power Suit. Now our soldiers have a chance to stand a heavy plasma hit. Te Power Suit have another modifications to become a flying suit researched immediately after it, so it is best to wait to for them and not waist resources.

Here is a manufacturing base. It have 5 Workshops to produce Laser Pistols and sell them for $. And yes, there are two ordinary interceptors. They are good the whole game, because they do not use Elerium to fly.

The tank tactic may be expensive, but is the safest way to increase some reactions of the soldiers. When we spot a relatively lonely alien we place the tank in front of it. Before that we spend all the tank's Time Units, so it will not make a reaction shot. Then we place two soldiers behind the tank in standing positions, and save their time units for a reaction shot. At the enemy turn, when the alien fire, they should return fire and increase their reaction skill. Even if the alien fire at the soldiers, it is very rare that the shot will pass through the tank. Some times, the tank survive 2-3 such moves.
